Beer guide in St. Petersburg
The second largest city in Russia has long been a center of attraction for tourists. Everyone finds something different in St. Petersburg. Travelers from all over the world come to study culture, architecture, traditions, local cuisine and, of course, to see how the cradle of Russian craft beer has changed since 2013.
It is worth noting that the city is associated with many, including the culture of drinking. It is not for nothing that the Leningrad group suggested in a song of the same name to come to St. Petersburg in order to enjoy plenty of alcohol. With this article, we open our section “Beer Guide”, in which we will advise the best beer houses and not only establishments.
We suggest starting your “trip” with the BeerGeek Bar & Store (2/45 Rubinstein St.). This is a cozy daredevil in the city center, which is located in a typical St. Petersburg courtyard, away from noisy streets. 12 taps from the best Russian and foreign breweries and about 300 varieties in bottles and cans. Contact bar and an unusual exposition of seating places for leisurely dialogs and new acquaintances.
We propose to continue the coup in the network craft bar Jawsspot (11 Mayakovsky St.). The loft-style bar with the most friendly interior is just a kilometer from the previous establishment. At your service are 21 taps with fresh draft beer, mainly from the Jaws brewery of the same name from the suburbs of Yekaterinburg. About 200 varieties in various containers are also presented on improvised store shelves. Snacks are rather modest: peanuts, nachos, olives and several types of cheese.
Further down the street you are already waiting in the Kiosk botshop (Mayakovsky St., 23/6), where you can plunge into the relaxed atmosphere and choose from more than 300 bottle and can varieties from all over the world. The institution also has six taps with draft beer, most of which on ordinary days are occupied by their own varieties or collaborations of the local Bakunin brewery.
For a delicious Neapolitan pizza in the middle of the pub crawl, we offer a snack at the Hophead taprum (24/27 Vosstaniya St.). In addition to its own recipes for traditional Italian dishes, the restaurant can offer you a choice of beer from one of 24 taps. If you are a fan of moderate and thoughtful consumption, then in the slender ranks of the cold rooms you can find about 100 varieties in bottles and jars. In the evening, the institution is filled with cheerful companies that, not sparing their feet, dance to DJ sets.
After a hearty snack, we recommend that you visit one of the new players on the beer market of St. Petersburg, which is located just two minutes from the previous attraction. Fillin’Good (28 Zhukovsky St.) combines a cozy craft bar with restaurant-level food. 24 taps of time-tested varieties from Russian and foreign breweries await you at the taps, and on the shelves you can always find more than 400 treasured cans and bottles.
We turn from Zhukovsky street and pass a few blocks up. In the basement at the intersection of Uprising and Baskov Lane, there is a bar of the highest-rated Russian brewery. The “beer diet” (Vosstaniya St., 37-39) is popularly called the “sour cellar”, as the contract brewery specializes in sour foods. In addition to the varieties from the guys from Diet, in the bar you can find 18 taps of draft beer and about 100 varieties in cans and bottles.
You can continue the “sour” route in the smallest institution of our guide – the Spontan bar. Located at 23 Baskov Pereulok, this small bar is more like a cozy apartment, decorated quite ascetically, but at the same time quite attractively. Spontan, as you might have guessed, specializes in “sour” styles and boasts 12 taps of draft beer, eight of which are dedicated to all kinds of Sauer Ales, Gyoses, Lambics and Gozes. Also in the institution there was a place for a spacious refrigerator, inside which you can find about 50 varieties from around the world.
An evening that flows smoothly into the night can be spent at the iconic RedRum Bar (26 Nekrasova St.). The flagship bar from one of the best Russian breweries AF Brew opened its doors back in 2015. Today, 24 taps are waiting for you at the restaurant, most of which are occupied by new items and a permanent line of the brewery. The bottle and can assortment has about 100 positions and can surprise even an avid birgik. Thanks to its unusual design and atmosphere, you will remember the bar for a long time.
A little further from the city center there are no less iconic establishments, which we also recommend visiting.
